Well, of course, I had to see the new film “Crazy, Rich Asians” to support my peeps.

It’s the first major motion picture featuring an all Asian cast in 25 years, since Joy Luck Club.

And it was better than I expected. A lighthearted, warm romantic comedy with lots of eye candy for women and men. Never hurts. 🙂

In the very first scene, the lead character Rachel is playing a game of poker in front of her college class.

Her hand is much weaker than her opponent’s but she bluffs and puts in all her chips. He folds, only to be stunned when she reveals her cards.

Rachel, a professor of economics and game theory at New York University, tells her students,…

“The key is playing to win, instead of trying not to lose.”

Most of us unconsciously default to playing not to lose. Because it’s safer since less is at stake in the short-term, preserving our sense of comfort. Keeping the status quo.

The problem is that when you’re playing not to lose, your focus narrows to protect yourself from potential failure – the possibility that despite your best efforts, you won’t get pregnant.

When you are playing to win, you’re energized by what you want so your focus expands to actively seek and create new opportunities. It’s more risky cuz you’re trading the safety of the known for the uncertainty of a future that is yet to be created. It also requires more conscious effort since you’re taking an active role in constructing the life you want. And that takes hard work, patience, commitment, and resilience.

The best distinction I can make between the two approaches is that when you play not to lose, you react to life.

When you play to win, you make life react to you.
